Apple Butter in the Making

Cheers to Autumn Baking and Cooking. Tea from the kettle staying warm in a gorgeous teapot to sip on while we fill the air with the indulgent aromas of the season. Not only have I now made applesauce, juice and turnovers from scratch this season but my mom and I also made homemade apple butter.! A lot of apples this year. Trying to find my signature Autumn flavor because, yes I know...what?!, pumpkin is just not it. Though, I did just try those pumpkin spice truffles and those were very subtle and delicious. I try every year to force myself into liking pumpkin and it hasn't worked yet. I am thinking apple and maple are my go too.

Anyway, I was afraid I would not like it because I am a big texture person. Meaning I am very picky and if it looks or feels weird, I'm out. However, this just smelled soo good that you couldn't possibly not want to just put it in your mouth. It turned out to be one of the best Fall things I've tried.

My family goes to Amish Country a lot and we try apple butter and the peanut butter marshmallow spread. Soo yummy. This was our attempt at it. Successful mission.

We started by adding the peeled and sliced apples to the crockpot but ended up switching it to the Dutch oven when our patience was wearing thin. It took hours and the apples still were not breaking down as well as we expected.

Add to crockpot or Dutch oven with

  • Cinnamon
  • Cloves
    • Nutmeg and allspice if you want as well
  • Water
  • Brown sugar
  • White sugar

Combine it all and wait for the smell to overcome your home.
